Ana Martins

MY BACKGROUND AS AN ARTIST

MY BACKGROUND AS AN ARTIST

Some of the carer agencies and companies I have been contacting or even families with patients who need special health care have expressed some surprise that I am a caregiver and also a fine arts artist.
In fact I have a large curriculum in participating in art exhibitions, organizing international exhibitions and also as a teacher of Artistic Ceramics.
Maybe to be an artist nowadays is something weird when Art it is not considering a need for the human societies. We ares still naked apes (Desmond Morris).
This surprise comes from the fact that, in many cases, such agencies and families do not yet understand that a patient not only needs health care but also need to perform activities that can give him/her more dignity to his/her life. Charity is important when necessary but does not help patients achieve more dignity for their lives, much less help and treat them from the point of view of their physical and psychological health.
Ideally, such agencies or carer companies would must have professional artists in different fields (art, music and others) and even experts in new technologies and could provide such support to their patients or clients as they called them.
In my long experience as a professional carer, I always provide activities that could give patients more joy and transmit to them the idea that they are not finished people and on the contrary they can still perform creative and playful tasks. My experience as an artist gave me the possibility to do painting, drawing and collage work with my patients and friends, as you can see in the photos below.
It is therefore a prejudice and a serious cultural limitation to assume that an artist cannot be the best among caregivers since she is not limited to company, medication or personal care for her patients.
Those who need to see myself as an artist and owner of an art gallery, please goto: facebook.com/viaaureaartgallery

The photos below shows the album created by Mr. Williams to honour his wife Mrs. Williams and some of thework we did together.
RIP Maura, love you so much, you are now among the angels and the stars above us.

RESPONDING TO THE CHALLENGES OF CARERS IN THE WORKPLACE

Working Smart: Responding to the Challenges of Carers in the Workplace

Wednesday, 26 June 2019

Employers for Carers is a forum for employers committed to developing good practice to support the 1 in 7 people at work who are caring for ill, frail or disabled family members or friends. The Elder Magazine talked to Katherine Wilson, who played a key role in setting up Employers for Carers ten years ago, about the compelling business case for better support for working carers and how the new ‘Carer Confident’ benchmarking scheme can help employers to measure their progress toward inclusion.

SPONSORSHIP OR PARTNERSHIP NEEDED

Hello

Today I would like to speak about my project on the carer service.

This is a project to be installed somewhere in Portugal preferably with the proactive support of local authorities particularly from municipal chambers and their Health Care departments.

This project it is not to create a new carer agency but a multidisciplinary elderly center involving beyond the caring service also several creative activities such like Arts, Music, Multimedia and and linking the elderly to musicians, artists, actors and actresses and techno experts in various fields.

To make this dream coming true I need some finance support and also logistic support from local authorities as mentioned above.
International carer agencies (especially those facing the possibility of opening a dependency or office in Portugal), are also welcome given the benefits they can bring by their experience and knowledge.

If you need to know me better and my skills on the carer service, my experience and certifications,
please take some of your precious time and read my CV on the right side of this blog.

If you read this post and you are in conditions to support myself as a sponsor or a partner and want to know more details on this project, please send your email to anacareruk@gmail.com

CAN SOMEONE BE FORCED INTO A CARE HOME? KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

Find out about your rights when it comes to elderly care and how to plan ahead to ensure your wishes are met in the future.

As you get older, you might have started thinking about elderly care options. It is a really wise choice to think about your care before anything happens that means you no longer have the ability to choose.
It might sound morbid to think about the future in such a practical way, but 2 in 100 older people have dementia and there is one stroke every 5 minutes in the UK. These are just a couple of examples of reasons you might need care, and reasons you might not be able to exercise your own choice over the type of care you have. To have the kind of future that you want, you should think ahead, before anything compromises your ability to choose for yourself.
Thinking about choice, it may have also crossed your mind that you might at some point be forced into care. Or perhaps you’re scared somebody can force you into care against your will. Although these kinds of considerations can be extremely worrying, it is important to know your rights, particularly if you are concerned you might be forced into a care home at some point.
Can You Be Forced Into A Care Home?
If you’re willing to receive care in your own home, care in a care home, move into sheltered accommodation or otherwise accept care that you need, then there should be no conflict with family, friends and social workers. However, it may be that you strongly oppose going into care and feel that you can take care of yourself.

WHAT IS THE RESTAURANT THAT MAKES MISTAKES

The Restaurant That Makes Mistakes is a new Channel 4 series about the UK’s first ever restaurant staffed by people living with dementia.

Alzheimer's Society is a proud partner of this ground-breaking experiment, in which 14 volunteers all living with some form of dementia are about to make viewers think again. Over 42,000 people with dementia are under the age of 65, yet only 18% of them have continued to work after diagnosis.

The Restaurant That Makes Mistakes shows how with the right support, and small adjustments, many people with dementia can stay independent and continue to contribute in the workplace.
How can I watch The Restaurant That Makes Mistakes?

The Restaurant That Makes Mistakes is a four-part series that begins on Wednesday, 12 June at 9pm.

You can watch The Restaurant That Makes Mistakes on All 4, the on-demand channel from Channel 4.

THE DEMENTIA FORUM x 2019 - PART TWO

INTERVENTION OF HM QUEEN SILVIA OF SWEDEN

“While we may feel that there is little cause for celebration, there are encouraging examples of the opposite; of developments that have been achieved through the uniting of minds – by coming together to make a difference. This meeting, Dementia Forum X, also has the ambition to serve as a platform for international collaboration and knowledge sharing which, to me, seems to be the only way forward to achieve lasting change.”

HM Queen Silvia of Sweden was the keynote speaker at Dementia Forum X 2019. Her Majesty encouraged stakeholders to look beyond dementia’s worrying statistics, and focus instead on the vast developmental potential in the field.

THE DEMENTIA FORUM x 2019 - PART ONE

The third Dementia Forum X took place on May 15th, 2019, at the Royal Palace of Stockholm. We were humbled by the presence of more than a hundred and thirty of the world’s leading business executives, policy-makers, and key stakeholders from the sectors of society, care, research, finance, and business. I am hopeful that the inspiring conversations which took place on the topics of Finance, Innovation and Women’s Brain Health have helped lay the foundations of a dementia-ready future.
We would like to express our deepest thanks to Her Majesty Queen Silvia of Sweden for her support of Dementia Forum X since the start. We are extremely grateful that Her Majesty has generously offered the magnificent Royal Palace of Stockholm as a venue for the event, and for Her Majesty’s personal commitment to improving the state of elderly and dementia care worldwide which is, undoubtedly, our fundamental ambition. In this spirit, I extend my gratitude and warm regards to Her Majesty Queen Sofía of Spain, and Her Royal Highness Princess Sofia of Sweden for their unwavering support as they graced the event for the second time since 2017. I am also sincerely thankful to Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamado of Japan and the First Ladies of Iceland Mrs. Eliza Reid and Chile Mrs. Cecilia Morel for honoring us with their presence.
Without the cooperation of our partners, Dementia Forum X would not be possible. The credit for its continued success goes to our collaboration partners Forte, Karolinska Institutet, Stiftelsen Silviahemmet, Svenskt Demenscentrum and Swedish Care International along with leading organizations AARP, Alzheimerfonden, Alzheimer’s Disease International, Arjo, Biogen, BioArctic, Boklok, Dr. Åke Olsson Foundation, Global Alliance on Women’s Brain Health, Home Instead Senior Care, Otsuka, Skandia and Öhman.
This year, we were very fortunate to have the World Health Organization launch their Global Guidelines for Dementia Risk Reduction at Dementia Forum X. Currently there is no cure for dementia, but addressing risk factors can slow its onset and progression. Thus these guidelines are essential in ensuring that we as a global society are prepared to address the challenges of the disease and take proactive measures to reduce the risk. You will find in this book a summary of the guidelines.
When we founded Dementia Forum X, our aim was to bring together representatives from different sectors and provide a medium for important dialogue around improving the lives of those with dementia, their families and caregivers. We are dedicated to achieving this goal and move a step closer to dementia-ready societies each year. I am eagerly anticipating the results of this year’s meeting, and look forward to reviewing them with our partners during the Working Meeting in 2020.
Highlights from the event can be found in this book. We hope it serves as a tool for critical reflection and the basis for future work.
Thank you for your presence at Dementia Forum X. We look forward to welcoming you again in 2021.

THE TRUE COST OF PARKINSON´S IN THE USA

THE TRUE COST OF PARKINSON´S IN THE USA
May 15, 2019
(an article of Todd Sherer, PhD)

Editor's Note: For more Foundation news and research updates, read the Spring/Summer 2019 edition of The Fox Focus, our biannual newsletter.
Our soon-to-be-released economic burden study clearly lays out the stakes in Parkinson's. It provides a comprehensive picture of the toll the disease takes.
The study shows that costs of Parkinson's to our nation are nearly double previous estimates and includes medical costs like hospitalizations and other ways the disease affects finances, such as missed work days and unpaid care.
The burden of Parkinson's affects patients, their families and their friends. This is why our mission to cure Parkinson's is so critical. For a patient, "cure" can mean a lot of things. A drug to stop Parkinson's from progressing may be a cure. But many patients, including Michael J. Fox, assert that a therapy to effectively treat symptoms over the long term without disabling side effects would be tantamount to a cure in their view.
Since 2014, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved nine new drugs and three devices for Parkinson's to address serious symptoms of Parkinson's. Now, with momentum and a growing community of researchers on our side, we have to keep pushing forward.
The Michael J. Fox Foundation's (MJFF) research strategy is focused on accelerating the most innovative ideas to cure Parkinson's. To do this, we fund research to define the causes of disease and identify new drug targets. And at the same time, we support research to measure and treat the causes and symptoms of the disease."
MJFF approaches Parkinson's research from the most important perspective, that of patients. Our Fox Insight study was created to hear directly from people with Parkinson's and act on what we discover. In addition, patients told us they needed more and better ways to deal with gait and balance problems. We issued a call for projects and asked patients to review them to make sure they would meet their needs.
We thank all of you who provide your valuable experiences through Fox Insight and help us in so many other ways. Your generosity is inspiring -- from donating to supporting research to volunteering for clinical trials and joining Team Fox -- you make success possible.

THE FOLLOWING STEPS

One of my main goals upon my returning to Portugal and my home in Sesimbra is to implement my own project to support elderly people and build a multidisciplinary center including health care, arts, entertainment and education in particular for training new carers.
In the meanwhile I am still open and available for accepting offers for jobs related with my skills and experience as a professional and certified international carer. So I have been contacting a number of international agencies, including the United Kingdom (where I've been for a few years), expressing my willingness to accept a work as a live-in carer, although for relatively short periods (two consecutive months the maximum).
Also from some international agencies I have received much understanding regarding my own project in Portugal and in some cases the manifestation of their interest in being part of it, either in partnership or taking advantage of my qualifications for a possible representation of them.

INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE "Creating Moments of Joy for People with Alzheimer’s"

This course is a must for any responsible and professional care giver dealing with people suffering from Alzheimer disease and a way to provide them moments of joy.
Thank you Jolene.
Ana
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Introduction
Welcome, and thank you for joining me in this short, online course.
I am your lead educator for this course, Jolene Brackey, and in this introductory video I will explain the basis of my philosophy about working with people with Alzheimer’s: creating simple moments of joy. I am an international speaker on Alzheimer’s disease and author of the book Creating Moments of Joy Along the Alzheimer’s Journey which includes a small portion of content from this course as well as plenty of additional examples, stories, quotes … and humor.
About this course
There are two weeks to this course, and each one contains videos, short excerpts from my book, and opportunities for discussion. Each week should take you no longer than two hours to complete with full participation, and you are of course free to move as quickly or slowly as your time allows.
While a few pieces of content come from my book, those pieces will be provided in the course and do not require any type of purchase or upcharge.
Every person with Alzheimer’s is completely different and your experiences with this person, in each moment, are your true teacher. However, we as caregivers, family members, or friends can find common threads that bind us together, help us through tough times, help us learn how to create joyous times, and give us a bit of hope. On most steps in this course, you are encouraged to post your own comments, tell your own stories, reflect, and ask questions to others who may be sharing similar experiences.
Let’s look beyond the challenges of Alzheimer’s and focus on creating moments of joy.

It was our privilege to be the platform for the launch of the World Health Organizations's Guidelines for Dementia Risk Reduction, and the Swedish launch of the #BeBrainPowerful campaign.  For the first time ever, we also had an open mic session where three lucky participants had the opportunity to take the stage for three minutes and speak about any topic. We thank our partners for their support of Dementia Forum X and look forward to welcoming all the participants once again in 2021!
